“2013 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is one of the richest, most powerful Chardonnays… Dried herbs, orange peel and buttery notes add nuance on the large-scaled, ample finish.” 95pts – Antonio Galloni, vinous, February 2016
2013 summed up to be a perfect vintage with clear sunny days and cool evenings. This produced a long, moderate growing season with extended hang time and even ripening, resulting in a full range of flavors while retaining natural acidity.
We press whole grape clusters for phenolic delicacy. Native-yeast and full native malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, with sur lies bâtonnage. After aging 18 months in 30% new François Frères French oak barrels, this Chardonnay was fined and settled in tank. It was then bottled without filtration.
Vine selection for our Hyde Vineyard Chardonnays are predominantly old Wente with some Robert Young—itself a Wente selection. The Wente produces a classic, Burgundian-style wine without the tropical fruit tones of some California Chardonnays. Hyde Vineyard wines often seem charming and feminine, with high natural acidity playing a prominent role.
