“Bright medium yellow. Complex, subtle nose melds yellow fruits, clove, butterscotch and a smoky sulfidey note that reminded me of a Coche-Dury wine. Wonderfully sweet and layered but light on its feet, showing lovely verve to its lemon cream, mineral and iodine flavors. The musky quality carries through the salty, fine-grained palate. Finishes with a firm tannic impression and outstanding length. Ramey describes 2010 as “a great, untroubled vintage–and a cool year.””

The 2010 vintage was cool, though not cold like 2011. We didn’t start harvesting Chardonnay until the end of September. The 2010’s have the richness of fully mature fruit coupled with crisp, refreshing acidity.
All of our Chardonnays are whole-cluster pressed and go through native yeast fermentation and then delayed malolactic fermentation in Burgundian oak barrels. Due to their great density and structure, vineyard-designate wines are able to absorb more oak without being overwhelmed, and see approximately 45% new French barrels. In addition, these wines spend more time in barrel (for this wine 21 months), completely sur lies, before being bottled without filtration.
Vine selection for our Hyde Vineyard wines are old Wente, Robert Young and Long Vineyards. The Wente produces a classic, Burgundian-style wine without the tropical fruit tones of some California Chardonnays. The Long Vineyards selection adds a floral note, and the Hyde Vineyard wines often seem charming and feminine. High natural acidity plays a prominent role.
