Ramey's brace of standout 2013 Syrahs continues the winery's notable sting of successes with the grape, and, just as is the case with its Rodgers Creek bottling, this one exhibits an uncanny combination of substance and crafting. It is big, extracted stuff to be sure and offers a fullblown display of ripe fruit, sweet oak, game and loamy spice with hints of black olives just off to the side, but for all of its richness, solidity and considerable size, it is remarkably well-balanced and never once errs to excess. Just as with its mates, it should be set aside for no fewer than five to six years.
