Platt Vineyard is located just five miles from the Pacific, and benefits from the cool marine influence. The soils are Goldridge Loam, uplifted from ancient ocean floor, planted with low-vigor rootstock (420A) to the Wente selection chosen from one of Ramey’s Hyde Vineyard blocks. The Platt vineyard Chardonnay is the most terroir driven of all of Ramey’s wines in this vintage, showing a remarkable combination of minerality and acidity throughout. It impresses with gorgeous aromas of pear, orchard fruits and lemon zest, woven together with smoke, flint and crushed stones making this impossible to resist. This is beautifully balanced and remains well focused through the mineral driven finish. This is yet another sensational Chardonnay from David Ramey which should not be missed. (Best 2016-2025)

The new Ramy Chardonnays are very much peas in a pod, and, as this partiular bottling attests, picking a favorite is a happy, if next-to-impossible task.  It follows the lead of its siblings in being very deep and a little reserved with suggestions of sweet butter, vanilla, minersla and taost set to the side of its still-nervy young fruit.  It is fairly full and slightly supple to start and grows gradually firmer and firmer as it goes, but its sense of solidity and central extract is never lessened, and, at least for the moment and by the smallest degree, it shows a soupcon more polish than any of its equally well-endowed mate.

The 2013 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard, under the well-known Sonoma Coast terroir, offers elegant white currant, quince and stony notes with hints of apple blossom, lemon oil and a touch of orange rind. This medium-bodied wine should drink nicely for 3-4 years.

David Ramey's 2013 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard is a wine of precision, nuance and understatement. Orchard fruit, mint and white pepper are some of the notes that emerge from this crystalline, focused Chardonnay. Still, there is plenty of the classic Ramey texture, but the wine remains reticent and in need of at least a few years in bottle. The Platt will require a little more patience than most Ramey Chardonnays.

The Platt Vineyard, a 32-acre vineyard planted by the late Lew Platt (a former tech industry CEO), is a cooler-climate site located approximately five miles from the Pacific Ocean. With emphasis on terroir and minerality, versus the fruit, this is a highly structured, masculine Chardonnay. Among the collection, this has the most naturally low pH (meaning, highest acidity) and also the highest tannins (because the berries are so small). So much to enjoy young, yet with tremendous aging potential. Intellectually stimulating, the kind of wine you want to sip and think about.
