The most exciting of Ramey's 2013s, the Pedregal reveals a classic Oakville nose of plush red-black fruits, licorice and rich earth; the prelude to a modern but relatively restrained Cabernet with good acidity and refined tannin. (Decanter)

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard has turned out beautifully. It is also much more accessible young than I expected, despite its considerable size. Bright red stone fruit and pomegranate notes are pushed forward. There is plenty of tannin, but it is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. There is plenty of stunning and potential here.

A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of ripe black berries, crushed black currants, pencil lead and dried herbs with hints of dark chocolate and menthol. Medium to full-bodied with a great intensity and harmony, it has a solid backbone of firm grainy tannins and great length. Still very youthful and primary, give it another 2-3 years in bottle and drink it over the next 20+ years.

This wine was co-fermented with 15% Petit Verdot from the same rocky, hillside site. The two varieties marry seamlessly in the glass, exuding a distinct perfume of forest mushroom and violet. Though pronounced in structure the wine is also soft and round, with a dotting of dried herb and a considerable length of clove and dust. It’s rich, intense and memorable.

Pedregal is a small, hillside vineyard on the lower slopes of eastern Oakville where Clone 7 Cabernet Sauvignon vines are planted on St. George and 110R rootstock. The 2013 Pedregal Cabernet from David Ramey is an absolutely majestic wine, which is composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot. It instantly captivates you as it releases its seductive aromas of ripe black cherries, dark currants along with an array of sweet spices, spring floral and some dried sage to name a few. On the palate this is full-bodied, rich and voluptuous, while demonstrating remarkable power at its core. It continues to impress with deep layers of gorgeous dark fruits and sweet spices which cascade on to the long, supple finish. Although this is simply exceptional today, the 2013 Pedregal Cabernet Sauvignon is still in its infancy and patience will be rewarded as this will continue to drink beautifully for many years to come. The consistent quality David Ramey is able to bring with his Pedregal Cabernet year after year is simply astonishing. (Best 2020-2036)
