The Hudson Vineyard is also located on the wind-swept, Carneros with light clay loam soils. The wine shows smoky, rich hazelnut and vanilla on the nose. These are mirrored flavorwise with the addition of toasted nuts. It has a creamy texture and a long, rich, lush finish. Delicious.

The 2011 Hudson Vineyard Chardonnay is the fifth bottling to come entirely from B-block, and it is stunning. It offers incredible aromas of ripe pear, vanilla, citrus zest, spices, almond, blossoms, minerals and pretty floral. It demonstrates impeccable balance of fruit and acidity with a wonderful mouth feel. The finish is so pretty, with lemon, minerals and sweet floral notes leaving a lasting impression. Vivid gold.  Smoky, mineral-laced pear and nectarine scents are complemented by deeper notes of smoky lees and iodine.  At once rich and energetic on the palate, offering intense orchard and pit fruit flavors and a bracing jolt of Meyer lemon.  Picks up an exotic tropical fruit quality on the finish, which clings with outstanding mineral-driven persistence.    Showing more fleshiness than the Hyde right now, with its ripe fruit taking the lead.

The Hudson Vineyard bottling is equally good, in a more firmly structured style. It is full bodied and supple, with excellent depth and balance, and displays a bit more restrained fruitiness (pear, pineapple, lemon peel) than the Hyde. It finishes with overtones of spicy oak and toast.

Ramey's 2011 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard is beautifully layered and succulent in the glass. Butter, almonds and hazelnuts all add complexity as this enveloping, resonant Chardonnay shows off its personality. I very much like the interplay of textural richness and pure tension here.
