The 2011 Sonoma Coast appellation Chardonnay from Ramey comes from 56% Martinelli Charles Ranch, 21% Ritchie Vineyard, 12% Platt Vineyard, and 11% Hyde Robert Young. This is the fourth vintage to be dominated by the Martinelli Charles Ranch on Bohan Dillon Road. A bit more Burgundian in style than the Russian River bottling, this Sonoma Coast Chardonnay brings wonderfully pure, mineral driven aromas of crushed stones and flint followed by lemon zest with a hint of vanilla blossoms. The palate is remarkably fresh and clean with a lovely touch of acidity. This is already very impressive and drinking fantastic right out of the gate, just a gorgeous Chardonnay. (Best 2014-2020)

Ramey Chardonnay 2011, Sonoma Coast. 14.5% alc. Pale straw-gold color; so clean and pure, such crystalline intensity, yet spare, elegant and subtle but with a core of natural richness; roasted lemon and lemon balm; notes of pineapple and nectarine; very dry, packed with limestone and flint minerality, but quite delicious, seductive, compelling. Why can’t all chardonnays be like this? Now through 2016 to ’18. Excellent. About $40.

Bright gold.  Aromas of fresh pear, nectarine and gingery spices, with a smoky overtone.  Unwinds slowly on the palate to offer juicy orchard and citrus fruit flavors and a touch of honeysuckle.  Richer and broader on the finish, ending with notes of white flowers and smoky minerals.

Among these, the appellation wines are more direct in character and less concentrated than the vineyard designates, but they are not ‘lesser’ wines. The Sonoma Coast bottling is elegantly flavored, crisp, and full bodied; a vibrant, well balanced, intensely flavored wine with a long, complex finish. In aroma/flavor, it tastes of pineapple, lemon peel,  grapefruit, toast, honey, and spicy oak.

Medium-light golden yellow; attractive, pear and apple aroma with light, spicy notes; medium-full body; tight, crisp, lemony, green apple flavors; lingering aftertaste. A bit leaner than their Russian River Valley Chardonnay, though nicely balanced and very appealing. Very highly recommended.
